5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent & detailed biography of an icon, 19 May 2012

There's never been an official authorised biography of the great Carroll Shelby until now. It's unfortunate that days after the official publication, Shelby should pass away.

Carroll Shelby was one of the larger than life American automotive icons and he collaborated fully with authour Rinsey Mills to produce an excellent and very readable biography. The story of Carroll's life is well told by Mills who obviouly interviewed Shelby's family and friends extensively. The book is well laid out with each chapter being divided into sections meaning the book can be enjoyed in small bites. It's a fascinating story and runs to over 450 pages. All that's missing is an index of race achievements. As motor racing biographies go, this one sets the standard and at £13 on Amazon, it offers exceptional value. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely Absorbing, 5 May 2012

So much has been written about Carroll Shelby, mostly from an automobile point of view, that it is fascinating to have the full context of his life. Coming from an author respected for his specialist 'old car' books I am pleasantly surprised to find Mills has a talent for telling a good yarn, with a touch for the human side - some of the vignettes of Shelby's childhood and early days are particularly well told and transport the reader back to a place and a way of life now all but lost. There is a 'Just William' aspect to the young Shelby and the scrapes he got into, which come alive on the page.
This book also reminds us that we are dealing with a very successful racing driver and his rise through the local level of events to victory at le Mans is a story that could stand on its own. Just to survive that era of motor racing is a considerable achievement - not forgetting the hair raising dangers he had already escaped as an airman, all recounted here in a factual style which never the less has the reader on the edge of their seat.
This biography spells out the parallel business successes and failures that were going on prior to and alongside the racing and which, as the book explains , eventually led to the whole Cobra, Mustang and GT40 project. The twists and turns of business life are recounted, as well as the motor racing and the Author seems to have managed to make contact with an amazing number of the personalities who were involved and who are prepared to speak candidly about Shelby.
Then there is the whole African adventure. The story has not been well known, but here it all is - some of the violent political twists and turns which went on in The Central African Republic and which Shelby and his safari chums somehow survived are related and one can only wonder at the work the writer must have put in to uncover the story. Oh and The Heart Transplant - this book seems to expand every time you turn a page.....
There is a good index which will help make this book a reference work as well as a good story.
Rinsey Mills chose a larger than life character to describe. A difficult task when the subject has authorised a biography, but to the credit of both Shelby and his author the story is not always flattering. Although Shelby is mostly associated with racing cars this is a life of much wider interest. Rinsey Mills has filled every page of a large book with interest and, perhaps, a little intrigue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate and complete., 2 Jun 2013

Good job on a complicated character. Anything I knew about Shelby first hand seems to have been presented with total accuracy. A fine biography, not the usual hagiography about Carroll and his works of wonder.

The Texan 'good 'ol boy' who transformed the beautiful AC Ace into the world beating Cobra that rubbed Ferrari's nose into the gravel. It's the stuff of fairytale and a story of David vanquishing Goliath. The best Anglo/American product of all time!
