5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful, memorable and eminently readable book., 27 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some writers produce one really good novel and then tail off. Not so Robin Reardon. This is possibly her best yet. It is a compelling story, told in the first person, of a young boy's battle with his sexuality against the background of small-town America and a fundamentalist, pervasive Christian ethos. Jude, the eponymous hero, is entirely credible, as is the whole social and moral atmosphere in which Jude grows up. The fundamentalist faith is not mocked and its emotional stranglehold is all the more disturbing for its understatement. The Reverend King, the pastor at the centre of the story, is a three-dimensional character, sympathetic, as well as deeply flawed.
Having been brought up in strict Christian surroundings, I found the portrayal of Jude's struggle against his sexuality and his desperate effort to 'cure' himself through the medium of faith entirely convincing.
This is a vivid book but it builds its layers of colour subtly with memorable evocations of people, places and atmosphere. My best gay fiction find so far in 2013.

5.0 out of 5 stars JUDE IS NOT OBSCURE!, 1 Aug 2013
This review is from: Revelations of Jude Connor, The (Paperback)
I AM NOT NEW TO ROBIN REARDON, BUT THIS IS MY FIRST REVIEW OF HIS WORK. I SHOULD OWN UP TO BEING A FAN. THAT SAID I THINK THIS IS A REALLY POWERFUL STORY. YOU REALLY CAN FEEL YOURSELF BEING DRAWN IN AND SEEING THINGS FROM JUDE'S STANDPOINT. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE GAY TO GET SOMETHING OUT OF THIS. IT LOOKS AT HOW GROUPS OF PEOPLE WITH STRONG CONVICTIONS DEAL WITH THOSE WHO DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO THEIR VIEWPOINT. FOR EXAMPLE PEARL. THE SITUATIONS COULD READILY BE APPLIED TO RACE, COLOR, OR POLITICS. IT IS A REALLY THOUGHT PROVOKING BOOK AND DESERVES TO BE WIDELY READ.
