This review is from: Of Darkness, Light, and Fire (Daw Book Collectors) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a slightly odd omnibus volume, in that the two novels it contains, apart from both being by Tanya Huff, are not in any way connected. 'Gateof Darkness, Circle of Light' is set in present-day Toronto. An Adept ofDarkness has gained entry into the mortal world and is planning to causechaos. The only people who can defeat him are Roland, a street musician,Rebecca,a sweet but brain-damaged girl, a bag lady, Mrs Ruth,Daru, anoverworked social worker, and Tom the cat. Fortunately they have the helpof Evan, a devastatingly gorgeous Adept of the Light, but will theircombined efforts be enough? This story has everything to make anenjoyable read, an exciting plot, interesting characters, and plenty ofhumour. The other story 'The Fire's Stone' is very different. Set on arather grim world with a decidedly Eastern atmosphere, the city of Ischiais threatened with destruction when someone steals the Stone, the magictalisman that protects the city from destruction. Darvish, playboy princeof Ischia, joins forces with Aaron, Clan Heir of a brutal desert tribe, and Chandra the Wizard, who is Darvish's reluctant fiance, ona quest torecover the stone and save Ischia. Although this is an exciting story, Ididn't much care for the setting, and there was rather too many gruesomeincidents for my taste. Chandra and Darvish are both attractivecharacters, and the story is quite gripping, though not one of myfavourite Huffs. These are both good stories (especially the first one),but I'm still not sure why they have been put in one volume!

I have enjoyed reading Tanya Huff's books - Of Darkness, Light and Fire is firmly in the fantasy genre. I enjoyed it although I prefer her urban fantasy novels.
