5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting insight into the world of a professional footballer

3.0 out of 5 stars an interesting read.....definitely different from TSF
I thought this book was was good and especially liked the fact the it gives an account as an 'in the life' across months of a typical season.

However, this book is more like a short memoir of the life of a EPL/championship football player rather than insight into the football industry itself given by TSF. Therefore, I found there was a lack of context (that I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting insight into the world of a professional footballer, 29 Oct 2013

This review is from: The Secret Player (Kindle Edition)
This book is along the same lines as "I am the Secret Footballer". It is an anonymous, sometimes darkly amusing, multi dimensional expose of the life of a professional footballer.

There are several differences between the afore mentioned book. This author seems to have played at a higher level (for better clubs) than the Secret Footballer. He has earned more money, played for England, had a chance once to join one of the top Premier League clubs (I think it was Liverpool). He hasn't played non-league or in a league lower than the Championship.

This author comes across as much more "one of the lads" than the Secret Footballer. The writing style of this book is different - The Secret Footballer seems to have a wider vocabulary than The Secret Player. This doesn't actually make much of a difference really. They both have a similar writing style which at times seems a bit chaotic. Although TSF uses very flowery words, the rhythm of the prose is very similar. TSF seems to be a far more sensitive soul, he seems older and is perhaps nearer to the end of his short career.

Each book tackles a wide range of topics - managers, agents, wages, footballers and women, homosexuality, football fans, the structure of a club, the dressing room, "the banter". The same conclusion is reached on a lot of the issues discussed. Each drops enough clues for you to have a stab at figuring out who the guy is. TSP wears Adidas Copa Mundial boots which are old school black and white. I am a season ticket holder at Spurs and believe me you can count on one hand the number of Premiership players who wear old school boots and not ridiculous fluorescent numbers.

One aspect that TSF explores in more depth is mental health, because he has actually suffered/suffers from depression. TSP talks about it but in relation to others who have suffered and the need not to ever bring it up with the club if you do suffer as it will be the end of you - "his heads not right".

I would recommend the book to anyone interested in football.

Fantastic insight into the real world of football. Highly recommend for any football fan. Slices through all the bulls**t and cliches you see on sky and gives you a picture of the true nature of the mindset of footballers.

It is amazing what goes on in the world of football. I really enjoyed reading this book as well as other things that goes on unreported in the newspapers. For instace i was surprised to read that players do not get paid per week but per month. I never new this. Reading about the thrills that comes with the huge salary, the spending, investments, . Theses things are important. i already knew about these. But people need to be informed about stuff in the world of football and plan for their future as it is just a career for a short while.

A real down to earth account of a modern day footballer. Actually makes you realise all that glitters is not gold and the life of a footballer is not the dream job that you imagine. Great read.Loved it

I ordered this having read "I am the secret footballer".

It's very much along the same lines, if a little more in depth. Well worth a read!

I thought this book was was good and especially liked the fact the it gives an account as an 'in the life' across months of a typical season.

However, this book is more like a short memoir of the life of a EPL/championship football player rather than insight into the football industry itself given by TSF. Therefore, I found there was a lack of context (that I like to have based on current events in football) and the writer generally aims to be less controversial and/or opinionated on the wider aspects of the game.

This is probably due to the audience; this book us written from sources based in the four-four-two magazine and seeks to illustrate more of the hum-drum of a footballer's life while TSF's origin in the guardian probably tends lead the writer to confront current controversial issues/misconceptions about football. I have to say a prefer the latter

In conclusion, found this book a satisfactory, if limited read.
