a fantastic series, well written with excellent characters both hero and villain. You just can't put these down and resist escaping to the world of ancient Rome. Macro and Cato have to be the best characters ever, on a par with Bernard Cornwall's Sharpe!

Up to his normal excellent standards, but rather more political than usual - inevitable with a rise up through the ranks (as anyone who has worked in a large organisation knows!!!).

Now looking forward to the "prequels" with optio Macro.

The indomintable duo in the wars again after ruffling a few important peoples feathers. The use of different nationalities by the roman army combined with the British weather and the fighting spirit of the local tribes makes it a fair read

Yet another masterpiece from the master. The way Simon describes the sites and smells of Rome I felt I was there with Macro and Cato. I found extremely difficult to put this book down and it was with great reluctance that I had to do so.

Macro and Cato are back in the ranks with the priveledged Preatorian gaurd. Thanks to their 'friend' Narcissus plots and intrigue follow these two everywhere whilst they try to unravel the threats to the Emperor Claudius. God what next!!

Yep, another ripper and duly exciting and gripping, at the very least it's a pleasant way to motor on through the series and being set in Rome it's a nice change from the usual battlefields that Cato and Macro more commonly negotiate.

This was a different approach or the 11th Marco and Cato novel. Stuck in Rome working for the sinister Narcissus. It meandered a bit at first but had a strong ending. With the open ended ending looking towards another book hopefully!
