This review is from: King John (Hardcover)
On 21st Febuary 2004 John Charles died, and the footballing world lost a legend. Anyone who is anyone should know John, and this book is the perfect tribute. From his early days as a Swansea player to his glamarous Juventus days, this book follows the life of the Gentle Giant, the greatest Welsh footballer ever. Essential reading for anyone who has watched a football match.

4.0 out of 5 stars Football - as it used to be!, 21 Dec 2011

This was a most enjoyable and eye opening read. I just about recall John Charles as a player, but had no idea of the financial difficulties he faced after retirement.

Although the best part of his career was spent playing in Italy, he is still revered in Wales as a footballing legend, and rightly so, as he was world class as both a striker and a defender.

The book covers his life, in his own words it seems, details its highs and lows, and accepts the blame for what went wrong later in his life.

He was known as the Gentle Giant, and this is how he appears. He just loved playing football, at whatever level, and it is remarkable to read about some of the teams he turned out for at the end of his career - can't imagine Wayne Rooney doing that!

The book opens the window on an era that has now passed, and that we are unlikely to see again - although whether things are actually any better now that football has become a money making machine remains to be seen.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars King John - John Charles the Autobiography, 27 July 2012

Bought as a good condition, used book, I am highly delighted with the condition and the speed of delivery. The content is good; a little different to most other soccer autobiographies as King John was from a different era to most of the others that I have.
I was honoured to share a table with the man himself when he was guest of honour at the birthday bash of a family friend who was a very well known man in the boxing world and a personal friend of John. It was in the summer of 2002, if my memory is correct and, although he wasn't the man he used to be he was still a huge, very smart guy. I only ever saw him play for Leeds once, but as a lifelong Leeds fan, the memory of sitting and talking to him that night will stay with me forever.
Boy, did he like a drink!!!!!!!
