Anyone who has heard Michael Palin's avuncular and distinctive tones (and that's probably 99% of the readership) will hear them instantly again on picking up this book. The man writes as he speaks which makes for an easy reading experience- Palin is a great communicator.

The beautiful photographs throughout the book are a wonderful enhancement to Michael's informative commentary. With close relatives in the Baltic States, I read that section carefully and found it highly accurate. This is a warm and sympathetic portrayal of our new European neighbours, which anyone who enjoyed the TV series would probably really appreciate. Michael Palin has defined himself as one of our great travel writers.

excellent description of the eastern european countries -particularly liked the one on romania as i will be visiting that country - also the ctach up with Ilie Nastase .

In the same mould like Sahara and Himalayas which I have - great photos as well - however the other 2 books had less Palin in the photos not so this book where Palin seems to be the chief protagonist in every other picture. spare us please.

Excellent report by the author of his travels through the newer countries of Europe, recounting his many conversations with the locals who have experienced many changes.

With the exception of the Yes Minister books, I struggle to think of any examples where a TV program (or an original film screenplay for that matter) has translated into a really good read. This book is no exception. Too shallow and trite to really inform (check out Post War by Tony Judt), too wooden and slow to be entertaining (Bill Bryson being the godfather of this genre - I would love to see him extend his travels to cover this territory!). This book is banal and trivial desperately missing the visual context that made the TV program good viewing.

Stick with the DVD.
