5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive - with a personal angle, 18 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Babylon File (Virgin) (Mass Market Paperback)
Andy Lane's Babylon File is possibly the only guide for B5 that you will ever need. With its sister companion, Volume 2 - it is, without doubt, a work of a passionate fan.
Although episodes are presented in transmission order, it also offers index lists of themed episodes, plot strands, Production Crew, Background Cast.
Each episode is given a summary, with attention given to its place within the overall story, its production credits, cast details, cultural references, lines to look out for, etc.
Along with the episode guide come some essays with intersting points made - Lane obviously knows his subject.
The time and energy put into this book stands as a testament to the finest SF TV series of the '90's - one that can be watched again and again. However, with the pure fact comes opinion - and the author makes no apology for it. Lane's thoughts can be insightful and annoying, inspired and blissfully unaware within a matter of lines. You may marvel at things he hated or missed the point of and wonder at other points he brings to your attention!
In summary - buy this guide, then read and enjoy whilst you watch Babylon 5 - you won't find better. But remember, watch the episodes he advises against yourself and draw your own opinions. The author's criticism is often personal reaction, and yours should be the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great Babylon 5 "Beginning of season 4" Reference Book, 18 Jan 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Babylon File (Virgin) (Mass Market Paperback)
Against:
Reference only until the beginning of the 4th season. It was up to date when released but now a new version should be writed.
It has some episodes number quotations wrong but its not any problem for a B5 fan reader and the others will not notice.
For:
Do you want to know the name off all ships that appear in the episodes ?
Do you want to cross check episodes ?
"Koshtations" and the Yvanova "life lessons" are a must read.
It focus not only the good parts of the serie but also the "bugs" it had (That's why is "Unauthorised")

Overall:
A fan choice if no full independent reference source is available.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good reference for any fan of Babylon Five, 24 Mar 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Babylon File (Virgin) (Mass Market Paperback)
Overall, a very good book. It doesn't cover all five seasons (which it cannot since all five seasons haven't been broadcast yet)so I would assume another volume will be released when the show is over. One thing I liked about the reviews is that Andy Lane is not a fawning admirer of the show. If he liked the episode, he says so and why. If he doesn't like an episode, he tells you so and why he doesn't.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I was expecting. . ., 8 Nov 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Babylon File (Virgin) (Mass Market Paperback)
Knowing that I'm a fan of Babylon 5, a friend recommended this book this book to me. I had my doubts about the book in the beginning. I was expecting a book that just contained plot summaries but I was pleasantly surprised. This book also contained bloopers, personal behind-the-scenes info, and critical reviews of various episodes. Overall, I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to any Babylon 5 fan.
