A very detailed history of this area of France and the persecution of the Cathars. It makes grim reading at times with so many senseless burnings of devout followers of the Cathar religion.

This book is an impressively presented volumne, stylish binding and glossy pages; it would be alleviated by more more illustrations (apart from that too-oft repeated labyrinth dotted around the place).

There is quite a lot of detail, sometimes repeated from page to page, as if the reader were a bit simple-minded. These details aren't closely referenced and sometimes there are errors (for example, Richard 1st was not the half-brother of Philip 2nd of France).

My main disappointment was in the writing style, I had expected better. The book is very far from gripping, and although it has to include quite a lot of detail, I had expected it to be an "easier" read, and more involving.

Nonetheless, for those interested in these sagas, it is a worthwile book. For those who are not already interested, I doubt it will stir them.

I must admit to being slightly disappointed with this book. I agree with the previous reviewer that it was rather a repetitive read at times as though the reader cannot remember facts from one chapter to the next. There was some useful historical content which shed light on the Templars and Cathars, but in view of the title I had expected to read more about the significance of the labyrinth, Chartres Cathedral and the Cathars and Carcassonne. I ended the book feeling that although I had some historical gaps filled in, the book was cashing in on the success of Labyrinth and Sepulchre.

Very good portrayal of Carcassonne and the historic importance of an almost forgotten part of history. Glad I found this title at last.
