A must for Miss Read fans
on 18 July 2010
Having dipped in and out of the Miss Read stories over the years, I have decided to start at the beginning and work forward. These stories stand alone as a gentle read, but starting from the beginning you certainly see the role of a teacher over the years change a great deal.
It chronicles the attitudes and ways of life with quiet observations, which at the time they were written was the normal way of life but read now, they reflect such a gentler way of life, town and counrty certainly shown as it used to be and how many of us would love to recreate now.
You can engage with the characters, seeing how a village hierachy was established but without the village characters the whole thing would collapse. The likes of Mrs Pringle and Bob Willet would make life in Fairacre
a great deal less easy for Miss Read. Can't live with them, can't live without them.
I would recommend these books as a gentle easy read.
