This review is from: One Soldier and Hitler, 1918: The Story of Henry Tandey VC DCM MM (Hardcover)
Whilst it is the connection with Hitler that firstly draws you to this book, it is the story of Henry Tandey's First World War that lingers in the memory. Many of us are familiar with the narrative of the First World War and shocked by the previously unprecedented numbers killed or injured along with the terrible living conditions. By telling a familiar story through the lens of the unassuming and modest war hero Private Tandey, however, this book focuses the reader on how the war came to shape and define his life and no doubt thousands of other young men's lives on both sides. The comparison between Hitler's and Tandey's experiences is fascinating - with Hitler embellishing his actions as a soldier to gain popularity and support whilst most ordinary soldiers such as Tandey reverted back to modest lives with little acceptance that what they had achieved was extraordinary. The story about Tandey's potential connection with Hitler is fascinating and is dovetailed skillfully with the story of bravery and sacrifice of the most decorated Private from The Great War.
