5.0 out of 5 stars If you like getting out and walking or biking, this is great
This is a great book, starts with grid ref, so if your not good with a map then take note as some you will need to be able to. Lots of different and varied places to go, simple easy instructions.

1.0 out of 5 stars Check if there is a lot for your area
Barely any info on my area, and gives map references rather than names. You would be better off googling your area and train lines you can walk

This book is a great idea and a good opportunity for some in depth writing about railway line cycling. Info is pitifully short on in-depth information. Maybe the author could get people 'on the ground' to contribute fuller descriptions for their area, and even add new ones (I'm happy to volunteer for Tyne and Wear). I wouldn't be confident planning ahead with the current level of info.

The book itself could have been very useful, if it hadn't started falling apart as soon as it was opened. I found a couple of walks in Devon to try and since then, I have been too afraid to open it as the pages are dropping out.

A good book which could have been very useful if the publisher had not found the cheapest, nastiest bookbinder!

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible pocket guide to walking old lines, 25 Jan 2013

As an avid explorer of old lines, this essential pocket guide is my first port of call when planning walks. It is a county by county guide of all known railway paths in the British Isles at least 2 miles in length. The synopsis of each line includes start and finish point grid references, type of trail (walkers, horses, cyclists), suitability for prams, pushchairs and wheelchairs, and the distance. The routes can thus easily be looked up on Ordnance Survey Landranger and Explorer maps.

The author is to be congratulated for the complete coverage, thoroughness and accuracy of the booklet. There are many photographs including a colour section with some very attractive scenes such as the remote Craig Aderyn on the Bala to Trawsfynydd route, the remains of the viaduct near Accrington, and Black Dog Halt on the Calne branch. A useful list of web sites for further information rounds off this excellent guide.

There are no maps. It would be impractical to include them in what is a basic pocket guide. However, the recently published Ian Allan 'Railways Then & Now' atlas shows all the routes in the railway geographical context. For further reading and more detailed coverage about specific routes, the History Press has published four volumes of the regional 'Railway Walks' series by Jeff Vinter.

Thanks to the work of Sustrans and local authorities, there is an ongoing programme of creating new trails and extending existing routes. The Railway Ramblers website provides regular update reports and it hoped that Jeff will update the Gazetteer from time to time.

There are lots of railway walks and cycle tracks mentioned in the book because it covers the whole country but you need to use map referances to find them, which is ok if you are a boy scout. Once found there is very little information given about each walk. Smaller areas of the country with more info would be better.I found more details via the internet for walks in my area.
