This review is from: Drove Roads of Northumberland (Paperback)
For those who are genuinely interested in the trade of Cattle and Sheep in the North of England, in the County Durham Northumberland regions, this highly detailed study comes highly recommended.

Incredibly well researched, similar in respects to Richard Moore Colyers study on the Welsh Droving scene, but with detailed descriptions of the routes taken and the financial implications to the various Drovers involved.

There are no coloured illustrations, but really they are not needed, but the illustrations chosen are thought provoking and bring great meaning to what Droving was all about.

Would I call it an easy read ? possibly no, but often academic studies are written for those with a genuine interest in the subject, and they will thank the author for providing the real picture of Droving, not just a study for those only with a casual interest.

This book is just as accomplished in its study of the Northern Droving scene as was MR Colyers study on Wales.

Mr Ian Roberts has written a book that will in time become the accepted study on The Drovers of Northern England, and I am sure when it eventually goes out of print, like MR Colyers book, the price will certainly increase.

Just one of those books that you know will become a classic text.

A great read, buy it now when it's widely available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drove roads, 17 Dec. 2010

This is an interesting overview of the Drove roads, and droving in the Borders, and Northumberland in particular. It is an academic text, not a coffee table book, and is full of information. The format is quite small, so the maps are difficult to read, and colour pictures would have been nicer.
