4.0 out of 5 stars "Introduction to a fascinating area of London"

I particularly liked the role that a flock of sheep and a swarm of bees played in the opening of Canary Wharf. Another reader complained about the lack of maps. These would have been nice, but I...

2.0 out of 5 stars No map so no point
Content is fairly standard and okay but the lack of maps makes the book frustrating and in this context, to compare the old layout of docks with the new, makes the book pretty pointless.

Book is structured around ten walks around a fascinating area of London. Three introductory chapters give the historical, social and economic context in a reasonably light manner. I particularly liked the role that a flock of sheep and a swarm of bees played in the opening of Canary Wharf. Another reader complained about the lack of maps. These would have been nice, but I didn't find it too difficult to follow descriptions using an A-Z. The photos, many in colour, whet one's appetite for further exploration.

This book is divided into 10 routes giving a comprehensive insight to the history of the docklands. With a good selection of black and white and colour photographs this book allows you to have a good idea of what the London Docklands had and now currently looks like. It is a well structured book which gives you a great insight into the social and economic context of the docklands. It's definitely a book I'd recommend!
