I had this pressed upon me by a young, impressionable, and enthusiastic librarian to read. Fortunately, it only took minutes to get through, as I didn’t study the photographs.

I have not read the book that inspired this (Fifty Shades of Grey: Movie Tie-in), nor the book that the book that inspired this itself inspired (Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as told by Christian) when the author and publisher saw how much money they could print as a result of publishing that.

This book consists of a series of two-page spreads (a technical term; no, really it is), each containing a good-quality and well-posed photograph of a shed, with an accompanying piece of text, of varying length and depth; ranging from a couple of lines to a couple of pages; and each more or less suggestive in content, veering from double entendres to out-and-out gardening. Sometimes there is a sort of continuity between pages, but it isn’t usually kept up for very long. Spaced out between these spreads is a connecting narrative that tells of the author/narrator’s rise to riches and power, based upon his experiences with/in sheds.

This is mildly entertaining, and I can see that young and impressionable readers, with more disposable income than is good for them, may find it more interesting or amusing than I did; and one day, they may find Terry Pratchett to be even more entertaining, in his way.

I did find some of the author’s observations more than a little amusing, but overall, like the subject of the source material, it can get a bit much; but maybe I’m now too old for gardening. It reminded me a bit, in a good way, of the sort of humour that died with the Kenneth Horne Show, or the Carry On films at their best.

Okay, there are some very funny moments in this book, but there are other hysterically funny (low priced) kindle reads out there that are way better value for money (ie Sleb by Andrew Holmes, Cross Dressed to Kill: The Hilarious Prize Winning Thriller by Andrew Lucas or the wonderful dark comedy The Dealer by Tony Royden).

Fifty Sheds of Grey is very short (finished it in a few hours) and made even shorter by a lot of unnecessarily large pictures of sheds. It did make me laugh - hence the 3 stars.

Ok, but very short and rather silly. Diverting nonsense that'll take you ten minutes to read.
