This review is from: The Black Cab Story (Hardcover)
There could be no finer narrator of The Black Cab Story than Alf Townsend, a cabbie with a lifetime's experience driving these iconic vehicles. The book is packed with anecdotes and facts. Indeed packed "as tightly as mi old girls' drawers" ... if you'll kindly pardon the pun
Page 92 shows cabbie Del McCarrick with that erstwhile siren of synchronicity, Carol Voderman. This photograph alone must be worth the cost of the book ? Check it out you Voderman fans and you'll see what I mean !! But where were you Alf when all this action was going down ?
Page 67 informs us that "the modern Asquith cab is styled on the old Austin High Lot ... and that .. there are only eleven Asquiths plying for hire in London" This may well be true but my uncle Delroy bought one of these special vehicles in Woodruff's Car Auction in 2009 and is currently running it in Mumbai, India where a regular customer is "The Big B" himself !!
We are also informed in the book that "the very first motor cab driver was James Howe of Hammersmith" I can certainly confirm this to be true as my cousin has a photograph of his grandfather standing next to James and Lord Trenchard in 1933.
Photographs, anececdotes, memories and lots of photographs of Alf and his family ...
Buy this book .... you will enjoy it
Certainly
And if you happen to bump into Alf's son Nick ... please give him my regards
As the other Alf (1966) used to say " If it aint Fray Bentos .. It aint worth the can"
That's as true today as it always was !!

A short read of one of London's most Iconic images. Alf Townsend, himself a cabbie has written this short book into the life of a cabbie. At times amusing, others insightful, we look at the history of the black cab, the fun of the "knowledge" the in fighting between black and mini cabs and what appears to almost be a turf war about being a heathrow cabbie. An enjoyable read without taking up too much of your time.
