5.0 out of 5 stars Re: Strange but True!, 27 Mar 2006

This review is from: Cock Lane Ghost: Murder, Sex and Haunting in Dr. Johnson's London (Paperback)
Paul Chambers's latest tome is undoubtedly his best so far. This book tells the story of a bizarre scandal that had London in uproar in 1762. At the centre is a rather vain and naive young man named William Kent from Norfolk who seems to have had a habit of getting young girls pregnant. Unfortunately for him he managed to impregnate two sisters from the same rich family and fled to London where he underwent a series of adventures that made him more enemies. I won't give the plot away too much, but William eventually found himself being accused of murdering a former lover by a ghost that appeared nightly in Cock Lane, much to the delight of the London mob. However, the ghost appreared to have strong connections with William's enemies suggesting that it was part of a plot against him. Trying to prove who was behind the scam necessitated the involvement of Dr Samuel Johnson and other luminaries leading to a climatic confrontation.
Chambers treats this true story in a novel-like fashion, unfolding the plot in chronological order. That said, he still manages to keep it factually correct and does not stray too far into the realm of speculation. The copious notes at the end of the book list his sources in minute detail; this is a nice touch and adds academic weight to the book.
In summary, I found this to be an easy and engaging read that was difficult to put down. The story and its cast of eccentric characters are fantastic. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Re: A Good Read, 20 Aug 2006
This review is from: Cock Lane Ghost: Murder, Sex and Haunting in Dr. Johnson's London (Paperback)
I greatly enjoyed this book and was amazed at the trouble that Paul Chambers has taken to research this tale and yet at the same time present a coherent and compelling story. The gist of the tale has already been outlined by another Amazon reviewer so suffice to say that this book not only tells a cracking yarn about some very disreputable and guilble people but it also paints a wonderful picture of London life in the 1760s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful telling of a strange tale, 4 Feb 2009
This review is from: Cock Lane Ghost: Murder, Sex and Haunting in Dr. Johnson's London (Paperback)
I have known the basic tale of the Cock Lane Ghost story for many years but not in any great depth. This is a wonderful account of the affair, well researched and written. It is seen in the context of the time, and how a conspiracy fanned by religious populism so nearly saw an innocent man tried for murder.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Dickens of a tale, 10 Feb 2012
This review is from: Cock Lane Ghost: Murder, Sex and Haunting in Dr. Johnson's London (Paperback)
Never heard of the Cock Lane Ghost ? It's mentioned on the first page of "A Tale of Two Cities". Find out why the haunting involved most of Londons leading society and caused an event that has gone down in history but is now largely forgotten. Well written and takes you straight back to the time delivering the facts as the author understands them.
