This review is from: Somme 1916: A Battlefield Guide: A Battlefield Companion (Hardcover)
A reprint of the original book first published in 1987, this book above many others about the Somme battles of 1916 needs to be on the shelf of every student and researcher of the Great War 1914-1918. The details about the dreadful struggles endured by Kitcherners Army during those summer months of 1916 is well documented; supplemented by indexes of Corps, Brigades, Divisions and Battalions which fought on the Somme between July and November 1916. Moreover, in addition, there are some interesting photographs and numerous maps. All areas of the Somme are covered in much detail. although some more than others such as Beaumont Hamel and Serre as against Morlancourt and Mailly Mallet. Nevertheless, the reader will find much of great interest. And to make it even better, numerous Military Cemeteries are covered too, even those which no longer exist since the Commonwealth War Graves Commission exhumed many of the British dead and reinterred them in the larger Cemeteries such as Serre Road No 2, and Mash Valley, Ovillers which today still attract large amounts of visitors every year. A superb reference work which needs to be read.

This review is from: Somme 1916: A Battlefield Guide: A Battlefield Companion (Hardcover)
This is one of the best researched and comprehensive accounts of the Battle of the Somme available. It is not an opinionated rant, but a book of facts about the people events and places.

This review is from: Somme 1916: A Battlefield Guide: A Battlefield Companion (Hardcover)
This is a phenomenal work, superbly researched, but not light bedtime reading. It's probably rather too detailed for many readers.
