4.0 out of 5 stars A gentle introduction to the subject, 25 Aug 2000
This review is from: Philosophy Made Simple (Made Simple Books) (Paperback)
I wanted an introduction to Philosophy suitable for an English/History undergraduate. This turned out to be just what I was looking for - a gentle introduction to the subject, with key concepts clearly identified within the text. It is better than any "idiots" or "dummies" guide because it treats the reader as an intelligent person, not as a dummy or an idiot. If you want to know more about philosophical concepts, I would recommend this book without hesitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction and Basic Reference Text, 29 April 2010
By
This review is from: Philosophy Made Simple (Made Simple Books) (Paperback)
At less than 400 pages, this is not a particularly large book, but it covers, in sufficient detail, the basics of philosophy. It is divided into the following sections: Ethics; Political Philosophy; Metaphysics; Philosophy of religion; The theory of knowledge; Logic; Contemporary philosophy. It is written in a very clear and engaging style, but without any hint of condescension, and is in no sense simplisitic. Obviously a work of this length cannot go into very great detail regarding each of the topics covered, but the survey is in no sense superficial. In short, this is an excellent primer for further study - a sort of "road map", if you will, of philosophy. Having worked your way through this wholly admirable book you will certainly be in a position to approach works by most of the authors referred to therein, without feeling intimidated, and with an appreciation of how the respective efforts of those authors have helped to shape not only philosophical thought, but the very world in which you live.

4.0 out of 5 stars Punches above its weight - but a little pricey, 25 Jun 2009
This review is from: Philosophy Made Simple (Made Simple Books) (Paperback)
I have the first edition which I bought with book tokens I got as a school prize.

Recently (a number of years later!) found it in a box, and reread it cover to cover. Philosophy grads may sniff at it, but it's as good an introduction as you'll get for its size. Each chapter includes plenty of suggestions for further reading, should the reader choose to follow up in more depth.

One caveat - the price seems rather high for a small paperback.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sound foundation!!!, 28 Feb 2008
This review is from: Philosophy Made Simple (Made Simple Books) (Paperback)
Having already skirted around the subject area of Philosophy I wanted to read a book that would put into context my knowledge on the subject. This book did just that. It also helped my understanding of certain issues which I had previously had trouble grasping in more specific and detailed texts.

It was quite refreshing to read a basic introduction to a subject that doesn't treat you like an idiot. My only complaint being that the section on modern philosophy is rather short.
