2.0 out of 5 stars Very hard work
I usually enjoy Mary Ballogh novels but this one is very hard work. Its quite a far stretched tale to begin with but contains mostly sex lust and self denial. Got to be very very hard work and couldnt wait to get it finished. Much prefer The Famous Heroin which is funny and loving and The Plumed Bonnet which has interesting detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of overcoming diversity, 22 Aug 1999

Two people from opposite sides of the tracks, having known each other from a distance, or thrown into a marriage. They appear meant for each other, but it lasts only one night. Its war time and an ambush the day following the wedding leads Major Neville Wyatt to believe his wife of one day, Lily, is dead. Almost two years later, he has gotten on with his life and his new wedding day is interrupted by Lily's unexpected return. She looks like a begger and is obviously uneducated, but Neville has only eyes for her. The rest of this warm and tender story involves how love wins over all obstacles. A great heartwarming story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Regency romance, 30 May 1999
By A Customer
During the fight against Napoleon, Neville Wyatt, Earl of Kilbourne, met and fell in love with Lily Doyle, daughter of a dead soldier. However, the misfortunes of war hit home as Neville returns to England as a widower. A sad but wiser Neville returns to the Ton where he rejoins the festive activities. Ultimately, Neville becomes engaged to his childhood sweetheart only to have Lily reappear.
Lily finds herself overwhelmed by the majestic home of her spouse. Even more difficult is for the commoner to adapt to his aristocratic family. While riding each morning, she realizes that she must leave her beloved because she is not good enough for him. He tries to persuade her otherwise, but she still leaves him and goes to London. However, someone wants Lily dead for no apparent reason and only Neville can keep his beloved safe, but she has left him to become a paid companion.
Award winning Mary Balogh is deservedly renowned for her best selling Regency romances that make the early nineteenth century seems as if the readers lived during the era. Her newest tale, ONE NIGHT FOR LOVE, lives up to the author's reputation and its own title as sub-genre fans will love this one night of reading. The characters are intriguing and the historical romantic suspense story line is entertaining. Ms. Balogh has another best seller to add to her excellent list.

5.0 out of 5 stars One More Extraordinary Story !, 18 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Mary Balogy has long been one of my favorite authors. Her stories generally combine some sort of "ugly duckling" type of character along with a mystery - but that doesn't convey the depth of her characterizations and the rich storytelling. Her heroines are sweet - but with a spine of steel often willing to forgo what they want for what they need, or must do. They have a strong sense of honor and obligation, right and wrong - and I love them for that. Her male characters are often Regency alpha males - but end up befuddled creatures uncertain how to deal with their feminine counterparts who do what they must.
Really rich storytelling combined with strong, true characters. Mary Balogh is an extraordinary writer who with every story gives us one more "Night of Love".

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 1 Jan 2011
This review is from: One Night For Love: Number 1 in series (Bedwyn Series) (Paperback)
Just when Neville Wyatt, Earl of Kilbourne, is about to marry his long-time friend a bedraggled looking woman enters the church and says she she is already his wife. Neville couldn't be more shocked especially when he realizes that the woman is Lily, his wife of one day and night who he thought died in the war. After the first shock he is happy to have her back and wants to continue with their marriage.
Lily only came back to Neville because after a horrible time in captivity she needs some help to get back on her feet. She may still love Neville but feels that his life is not for her. She thinks that she is too normal to be the wife of an earl. So when Lily has the chance to leave Neville she takes it although he wants her to stay. However he is not ready to stop fighting for her and their love.
Will Lily and Neville use the second chance to share a life full of love and happiness?

I bought "One night for love" because of the beautiful UK cover (so yes, covers sell books).
I'm overly critical about historical romances (no idea why) and often the books in this genre are hit or miss for me. "One night for love" was definitely a hit. This is the first book I read by Mary Balogh and I enjoyed everything about it.
The love story is wonderful and I enjoyed that Neville and Lily had time to start their relationship anew and that nothing was rushed. I loved that Neville really cared about Lily's happiness and how he handled the cruel things that had happened to her. Lily was a great character. She was so strong and dignified although she went through hell. The way she felt about what happened to her and the way she talked about it touched me deeply. She told her story with what I would describe as a "quiet voice" and because of this her story was very powerful and impressive.
I also enjoyed all of the other characters. They felt real and the way Lily was received by them was complex and realistic.
There's a mystery going on in "One night for love" and it has to do with Lily's past. It's not too dark but gives Lily and Neville the chance to get close again. The happy end may be over the top for some readers but I loved it because Lily deserved to get a happy end and a new family.
I already bought and read the next book in the Bedwyn - series and I will definitely go on with reading this very entertaining series.

cover
Love the cover of the UK version because it's so stylish and beautiful.

final appraisal
A wonderful historical romance that makes me excited to read more by Mary Balogh.
The story is lovely, sometimes sad, funny and always a joy to read. Mary Balogh's writing style is very engaging and I loved reading about her characters. Everything about this book felt right to me and I'm happy to have discovered another author of beautiful historical romances.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Night for Love, 26 Mar 2013
This review is from: One Night For Love: Number 1 in series (Bedwyn Series) (Paperback)
Review taken from my Blog Post (#57) in December 2010, after borrowing from the library:

A lovely poignant and romantic tale of Neville, Earl of Killworth and Lily.

Neville is waiting in the Church as his bride is about to come down the aisle, a small beggar woman Lily Doyle pushes past to stop the wedding .......... Neville, she tells everyone is her Husband. He confirms the story that they were married on a battlefield in Portugal, and he thought that she had been killed in an ambush the next day.

The bride waiting was Lauren Edgeworth (I reviewed the book a little while ago of her story "A Night to Remember").

Lily, it also eventually turns out is a Daughter of a Duke .... Sargent Doyle (the man she thought of has her Papa) was the husband of her old nurse, in whose keeping she had been place as a babe in arms.

A 4 Star read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another first rate story from Mary Balogh, 28 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the first romance in the excellent Bedwyn saga.
It sets the scene and deserves to be read first.
These tales can certainly be read in any order, but I recommend they be read in order of publishing.
