If you are a professional or MBA student in the field of luxury, this should be your reference handbook - especially this new edition. It is a far more mature and concise book than the first edition, incorporating the best of all other luxury brand books, covering consumer behavior in the emerging economies and provides more detailed insights. There are now too many books on this subject and most have no depth or are already out of date. Of course due to the popularity of the big brands in this field, the authors focus on these big brands too. That's the downside for the small entrepreneur, craftsman or creator but it will certainly help you to form the mindset needed to perform in this field. It outlines clear opposites in approach between the classical marketing and branding thinking that emerged out of the industrialized mass market and democratic American form of marketing and branding that we are familiar with and the European hierarchical approach to luxury which is quite the opposite. Sadly it does not cover the clear differences between the small start-up high luxury brands and these mass hybrid luxury models now termed 'luxury brands'. For an insight into this area I would recommend that you read the 'book' section on HAUTeLUXE.net written by Prof Philippe Mihailovich for The Luxury Society that focuses on luxury brand architecture providing sharp insights on how to differentiate and challenge the dominant brands. I sincerely congratulate the authors for this edition and would strongly suggest that every practitioner and serious student in the field reads it. If you happen to own the first edition, ditch it for this one and read this issue from cover to cover because you are sure to learn a lot from it.

This book is a must have if you work or are interested in the luxury sector. It covers all the issues (from the definition of luxury, marketing, brand management, business models, luxury and the internet, etc) and is very practical. The authors are well known within the luxury sector and they poured their experience in this book. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on the anti-laws of luxury marketing (in itself worth the price of the entire book). The book is packed full with examples taken from real luxury brands and flows amazingly: very well written, clear and straight to the point. The examples are still current as the book was published in 2012.
Such a shame it contains some minor errors (Ferre' was a designer for Dior and not for Chanel as the authors stated) and several spelling mistakes. Additionally the chapter on brand stretching and brand extension is a little bit messy as the authors keep on jumping from one concept to the other without any clear logic behind it - it starts talking about brand extension then in the next paragraph is brand stretching and then back to brand extension.
