5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful, thought provoking novel, 25 Nov. 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Under a Thin Moon (Paperback)
Livi Michael's first novel depicts the lives of four working class women existing in the margins of a Manchester council estate during the period of Thatcherism. Each of these women struggle with poverty and unemployment, and, despite their differing circumstances (Wanda is a single parent, Laurie has dropped out of university) each are psychologically and physically entrapped within the constraints of their class and gender.
Highly politicised, Michael presents us with a compelling yet grim portrait of their isolated, alienated lives and fractured identities. Her novel reads as a harsh criticism of the suppression and disempowerment of working class women through the processes of capitalism and patriarchy, and highlights the difficulties of day to day survival in such a world.
Despite the bleakness of this novel, it grips the reader through it's hypnotic tone and sheer originality. Under the metaphoric image of the thin moon, one cannot fail to be moved by the struggles of these women who always seem to receive the thin end of the wedge. The novel draws you in, so that by the end, you care about these women and what becomes of them. Plus, by the end, through one of the women, the author presents a chink of hope for the future. A powerful and thought provoking novel, highly recommended.
