5.0 out of 5 stars Gothic Fantasy at its all-time best!
Mervyn Peake's seminal work of gothic fantasy is by far the most amazingly crafted piece of English Literature of the 20th Century. Macabre, dark, brooding, and hipnotic.
The desciptive passages (which can take up whole chapters!) are trully spell-binding. This isn't a work to be taken lightly. This is not light reading by any stretch of the imagination - and it will...

3.0 out of 5 stars Steerpike's the fizz, 24 April 2013

Yes! this slightly turgid, clumsy tome is saved time and time again by that twisted form of Steerpike!
Sadly the other players struggle to capture the main ground, which is a shame as Gerttie Groan and Titus really could have caught the reader as did the aforesaid 'dark charlatan'.
The other players seemed to undergo inconsistent character transformations; not unlike the 'vegetables' in that evergreen series (on R4) 'The Archers' which at times seems totally incongruous to the spine of the book which didn't really knit well to form a direction....
Not sure whether to read Titus alone?
Steerpike's loss leaves a gaping hole for the foreseeable futre
