5.0 out of 5 stars Neglected genius, 5 Aug 2003
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Parents Worry (Paperback)
In his native Holland, Gerard Reve is revered, his books are taught in school, etc etc. Over here, he is unknown. As far as I know this is the only Reve novel to have been translated - and of course it's out of print. This is a very sorry state of affairs. There are many reasons to love Reve. He's a) alcoholic, b) homosexual, c) Catholic, d) misanthropic and e) extremely funny. If anyone remembers the early Paul Verhoeven movie The Fourth Man - well, that was based on a Reve novel. Parents Worry is a perfect distillation of all Reve's obsessions: the lonely paranoid poet, boozing, masturbating, going to Mass etc. This may sound dire, but believe me, it's a hoot - if you have a black, twisted sense of humour, that is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Under-rated Dutch gay classic, 14 Mar 2007
This review is from: Parents Worry (Paperback)
I can only agree with the preceding review. Reve's books make for marvellous reading, and it's a pity that "Parents Worry" is the only one available in English. Not actually being my favourite Reve (I preferred the "Dear Boys" - "Lieve jongens" - dilogy), "Parents Worry" does have all the essentials of the work of this great Dutch modern classic: obsession with sex and phantasies about beautiful boys subjected to cruel treatment or inflicting such treatment on other boys, booze, religion. All these elements are artfully mixed together by the author, and the effect is a unique cocktail - which at times can be so hilarious it makes you roar with laughter. By the way, Gerard Reve died in April 2006... Maybe time for a posthumous edition of some of his other books in English?

5.0 out of 5 stars best Dutch author, 24 July 2010
This review is from: Parents Worry (Paperback)
Gerard Reve is the best Dutch author of the 20th Century. But why did they translate Bezorgde Ouders? It's is not his greatest book. This book is only fun when you've read more of Reve's work. Reve even tried to write in English (The acrobat and other stories) without succes. Learn Dutch and read Reve.
