5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book, 8 Aug. 2013
This review is from: Churchill, Winston S.: Finest Hour v.6: Finest Hour (Hardcover)
Finest Hour by Martin Gilbert is a superb work dealing with the most famous period in Churchill's long political career when he rose to be Prime Minister at a moment of great national crisis. The book itself is well-written, informative and very, very detailed. The Churchill in this volume is the man of the hour at the peak of his career, achievements and abilities who through sheer determination and brilliance helped to galvanise a dispirited nation in one of its darkest times. Overall, an excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Epic, 29 April 2010

This review is from: Churchill, Winston S.: Finest Hour v.6: Finest Hour (Hardcover)
This volume of Martin Gilbert's official biography covers the early years of the war until the end of 1941. As such it deals with the most crucial and momentous days in the entire history of Britain: the outbreak of war; Dunkirk; the Battle of Britain and the war in North Africa. This is epic stuff indeed and Martin Gilbert does it and Winston Churchill full justice. This is a mammoth volume but one that should be read from cover to cover: it is perhaps Martin Gilbert's finest hour also. Quirky things stick in the memory: the moving eloquence of Churchill's letters to Roosevelt (re. the American destroyer deal: 'in the long history of the world this is something to do now') and to Mussolini; the details behind Brendan Bracken being made a Privy Counsellor. But beyond all this it is a testimony to Britain's and Churchill's finest hour when he stood alone as the champion of the world and voiced his opposition to tyranny in words that will last as long as mankind itself.
