This was the first Hazel Holt book that I read and I have to say I rather liked it. Sheila Mallory as the central character is a retired lady of a certain age who finds things out by merely asking questions of the people around her - then she tells her suspicions to a local bobby who she has know since he was a small boy - he listens to her and if warranted will do a bit of investigating. I have read comments that compare Mrs Mallory with Miss Marple and I understand why - no violent situations for this genteel lady but a lot of nosing about and listening to everyday conversations from the people around her - which seems to work and somehow reveals the clues that solve the crime. I like the complicated relationships in this book which makes the solving of the crime less straightforward - all in all a good read and having discovered Hazel Holts character I shall seek out other books about her

I like all Hazel Holt books. She writes well and I feel that her characters are quite real. Of course they are all from fairly privileged and proper backgrounds, and her writing reflects that. So there is no swearing or nitty gritty kitchen sink drama here.
More your afternoon tea and cucumber sandwich sort of book.

Another "cosy" mystery for Mrs Mallory, a likeable and credible character. No bloodthirsty or gory details in the best tradition of classic mystery writers. Hazel Holt triumphs again

Good book in the Mrs Malory series. Plenty of action, very readable. Love the West Country setting. Again- watch the title as some of the USA ones have different titles
