After reading the brilliant crusades trilogy by the same author I quickly bought this opening book in the conquest series and I wasn't disappointed. The book relates to the de Hautville family and their exploits. A very good read about a family well worth knowing about. Looking forward to starting the second book asap

I have enjoyed it, the characters is based loosely on real characters in Normandy and italy and it was a interesting read.

This is the first book I have read by Jack Ludlow and will certainly be reading more ,it's set in a period that I did not know too much about could not put it down.

I chose the 5 star rating because the book is part of a series and is fantastic reading which I would recommend to anybody who is interested in books on the St John Knights

I found the book extremely difficult to get into, the characters were not well-developed at all, and from a linguistic and grammatical point of view, the book was poor to say the least. Difficult to follow due to a haphazard plot and chapters which were difficult to follow. I was all the more disappointed as the last book I read was by Bernard Cornwell, an expert in historical fiction. I really don't know how I managed to finish the book (I pride myself, however, on wading through a book, no matter what, but this was too painful an experience to prolong). The sad thing is that I bought the other two books in the series at the same time. I'll just have to hang on to them until 5th November!
