5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected treasure
I picked this book up more or less at random, never having heard of it or Hogg before. Havng read it, I can't believe it doesn't have a higher profile as a classic of British literature, because it is one of the most startlingly original books I have ever read, and was well before its time in terms of structure and themes.
The book consists of two parallel...

3.0 out of 5 stars Examination of a fundamentalist mind
This is one of the single best books about fundamnentalist thinking there is, it focuses upon the ideas of predestination and justification in the Christian tradition, which still have some currency among Christian evangelists the world over but essentially the same fatalistic convictions are at the heart of every so called "martyrdom" bombing.

Has this got anything to do with Adam Smith (though I know he wrote his books a long time before this was written). It's just that I am getting confused between 'Guiding Hands' and (oh no!) Alistair Crowley's 'Do what thou wilt'. Has this got anything to do with 'Hogmonay'? (Really worried I might get into trouble for this, but have to ask...)

How can the Scottish have switched from being Roman Catholic supporters to being Calvinistic overnight? What has John Knox got to do with it?

I have friends in Scotland, and am a bit worried about the connections I am making - it may just be my own brain going on overdrive...

I really struggled with this book: it's dense and complicated and I couldn't make it past the first 20 pages. I guess I was missing something....
