This is not a book to buy if you are looking for information. It is basically a picture book, although there is a decent write-up about each picture, mentioning the context. The left side of each page contains the narrative while the right side contains the picture.

The book is not a pocket book, but is a handy size that will easily slip into a brief case, leaving plenty of room for other stuff, for carrying around. I can only assume that the reviewers who are disappointed with the book were expecting a different type of book, perhaps like the author's earlier full-sized books.

I enjoy this book for what it is - a handy picture book with extra info.

Not up to the usual Atterbury "cram as many pics and info onto a page as you can". This is a photo one side and some lengthy detailed info on the other which doesn't take long to get through. The early B & W photos are interesting in their own right without the literary conjecture whilst some of the later colour ones I found not really worthy of inclusion. As it was a Kindle edition I have deleted it as not worthy of keeping - thankfully it was only a couple of quid.

I was expecting more than a quick overview and some staid photos. Good writing style. This ebook should really be in the 'rail travel in an hour' genre, and priced accordingly. It might be better value in its book form for rail buffs who want a physical copy of the photos.

The book arrived as per the expected delivery date. My, what a small book it is, measuring less that 15 cms/6 inches roughly square. The price probably reflects the size of the book, but I would have preferred a thicker (the pages themselves add up to less than 1 cm. thick) and bigger tome with more illustrations - both written and pictorial - of the Century of Railway Travel. If you want to cringe at the seeming lack of health and safety in the old days, one only has to look at the photograph opposite to page 62. Paul Atterbury has thus made an attempt at illustrating its title but it lacks substance.

A good size book to take on holiday, easy reading and very informative. Put together by an old favourite Paul Atterbury.

Classic Paul Atterbury - I did not know he wrote for Shire Books - hence the 'pocket size'. Still an excellent read.
