5.0 out of 5 stars An informative, well-illustrated account of the architectural heritage of Britain's vernacular buildings., 14 Oct 2013
This review is from: Traditional Building Materials (Shire Library) (Paperback)
Most old buildings were constructed from materials close to hand, and so display a colourful palette that echoes the local landscape, from the pinky-grey granite of Aberdeen to the honey-coloured limestone of the Cotswolds.

Building historian Matthew Slocombe explains what traditional building materials were used, where, why and how. "These materials help illustrate the lives and aspirations of people of the past," argues Slocombe.

An informative, well-illustrated account of the architectural heritage of Britain's vernacular buildings.

I bought this book for my husband. We both enjoy architecture. The book is succinct in detail, ideal to take out and about and has helped to develop our understanding and interest in the fabric of buildings.

This little book is packed with very useful information on the use of traditional building materials . Although I have been in the construction industry for a few decades , I still found it to be a very interesting read . It is well illustrated and describes fully the origin of the materials and their application to the construction of the older buildings , even modern day buildings . Young engineers and architects would find the book highly educational and I recommend they purchase a copy . After all it is very reasonably priced for the amount of information being dispensed .
