This review is from: With Scott to the Pole: The Terra Nova Expedition, 1910-1913 (Hardcover)
I have a minor obsession regarding the Antarctic and especially relating to the expeditions on the continent. This book is packed, cover to cover, with huge and breathtaking photographs of the landscapes, the crew, their living quaters, the ship... basically everthing to do with the expedition.

You don't need a special interest in the Antarctic to appreciate this book. The photographs have a very special artistic quality which cannot fail to stir your emotions. This book really transports you to the time and place and I know this is a book that will always have a special place on my shelf. An absolute must for anyone who feels the spirit of exploration or even with just a fancy for the earthy, gritty quality of this great age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historic images beautifuly presented, 21 Nov 2009
This review is from: With Scott to the Pole: The Terra Nova Expedition, 1910-1913 (Hardcover)
Unmissable images for anyone who has an interest in polar exploration, the photos are very well printed on large format in good quality and probably the most complete collection currently published.
Spending a few hours leafing through the pages is to step back in time. The shot of Cherry-Garrard having a first meal after his Worst Journey realy sums up the joys and misery of polar exploration.
Also consider Shackletons volume in the same format South with Endurance: Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition 1914-1917

This review is from: With Scott to the Pole: The Terra Nova Expedition, 1910-1913 (Hardcover)

5.0 out of 5 stars Terra Nove photos, 10 Feb 2012
This review is from: With Scott to the Pole: The Terra Nova Expedition, 1910-1913 (Hardcover)
This is a fantastic book, detailing Scott's expedition, but more importantly showing Herbert Ponting's photographs recording the travails and travels of the team. For anyone intersted in photography, and using digital cameras now, perhaps sophisticated DSLRs, the photographs will be stunning - the equipement Ponting used couldn't possibly approach the kit we have today, yet the photos are amazingly detailed - excellent!

This review is from: With Scott to the Pole: The Terra Nova Expedition, 1910-1913 (Hardcover)
I first acquired this collection several years ago and was amazed how much insight it gave into Scott's expedition as a whole.

To me the compilation illustrates well the bleakness of the polar landscape and vastness of its ice floes. The character studies and group photos show in all a determination to overcome the hardships of the severe conditions.

The stills of the `Terra-Nova' are crisp and sharp as pack ice and highlight the diversity of tasks undertaken. There are pictures of the crew climbing riggings, furling sails and carrying out numerous scientific studies.

Ponting also took time to photograph the local seals and penguins, not to mention the expedition's sledge dogs and ponies.

Ponting took most of the stills with a glass plate camera; he no doubt believed it would produce superior images compared to the emulsion films of the day. Some would have required Ponting and camera to straddle makeshift platforms and dangle precariously from ropes to achieve the final result.

The photographs are set out in sections from initial concept to that final fateful journey and are supplemented by texts. There is also a feature on Ponting the camera-artist himself.

This book is well worth getting for the photos. To think they were taken with glass plates the quality is amazing. It brings home the trials these men went through

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, 27 Oct 2004

This review is from: With Scott to the Pole: The Terra Nova Expedition, 1910-1913 (Hardcover)
Not only did I get this book with over £10 off the high street price but I also got a stunning book.
I haven't read the text yet, I've just flicked through and looked at the pictures from Scott's doomed expedition. This captures the pain, suffering and also the hope of the men in the Antarctic.
Only let down is Ranulph Fiennes and his bleating in the preface but apart from that this book looks fantastic and is up there with the book on the Endurance expedition.
