Entertainment 5, Practicality 0, 4 Oct 2008
There is no doubt that Stephen Fry is entirely the MOST suitable person for the job of reading ANY story for an audio book. His voice is perfectly suited to story telling and he is able to define and animate the characters in his own colourful way. It's a good audio book and this is very much attributed to the talented Mr Fry.
I am disappointed however, that the indexing for the CDs are in such a pickle! Whilst I understand that copying CDs and music is frowned upon, is it not feasible that a person can listen to this audio book on their MP3 player? Attempting to transfer this into a more mobile format is something of a mission. The CDs chapters and files are not labelled properly, so if you want to put this into MP3 format you will find you have a jumbled mess! This audio book was bought to provide some entertainment on a long plane journey. Sorting it into order has taken almost as long as the trip itself! If you want to listen to this on your ipod - GOOD LUCK!

The Saga Continues..., 28 Aug 2001
By A Customer
In my opinion, not as riveting as the first, but a good read nonetheless! There were a few things that as an adult I questioned wheras a child would just accept (like the whole flying the car to school incident - I would have waited for Ron's parents to come back through the barrier before deciding what to do - (indeed, I even questioned why they didnt come back straight away when they realised Harry & Ron weren't behind them!) - Its been a fair few years since I was thirteen and you tend to forget that at that age you act first, think later!) and I feel that maybe this spoiled my enjoyment of the book ever so slightly. However, the book had yet another excellent plotline, some new characters (How annoying was lockhart?! did anyone else want to kick him in the ... shins) and again the introduction of a few seemingly insignificant tidbits of information that link into the story in future books. The whole heir of slytherin issue really kept you guessing - I was way off, despite changing my mind a million times. I even suspected Dumbledore at one point! All in all a worthwhile read and a must if you want to read the lot.

Slightly lacking in comparison to her first book., 23 April 1999
By A Customer
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone is in my top 5 favorite books, out of several hundred. I have recommended it highly, loaned out my copy and got friends hooked. So I was VERY excited when I I received Chamber of Secrets as a gift! I'm sure there are differences between UK and USA prints (i.e. cover illustration of first Harry Potter is nicer in the US, but UK has the cool feeling cover under the paper cover), so hopefully that accounts for some of the problems. I started reading this one and was disappointed. First of all, the proofreader (or author) missed some things in the beginning, or rather, missed putting things in (i.e. the) at times. Slightly annoying if you pick up on that. Second, it has a considerably darker feeling compared to the first which took me a bit to get used to. Third, there are more things in this book that left me questioning (i.e. how could Ron get the xmas present for Harry? when do they have time to shop? what does Mrs. Weasley do?) or seemed contradictory. It was good in that the formation of the villain was a *very* creative idea that I hadn't read before. Also, Dobby was an interesting little character that would spruce things up. Description of the degnoming was very good. Hermione does not get the credit that she deserves. Hagrid and Dumbledore are still quite as fun and interesting as always. Overall, it's a slower read, and not as good as the first book but still decent with a nice atmosphere twist at the end. I did notice some format similarities between the two books -- I am sincerely hoping that Rowling is not going with a formula format to get books out so quickly or this series will get boring and predictable (i.e. Harry has problems at the beginning, Harry leaves that for a bigger problem, someone else comes up with the answer, people accompanying Harry run into trouble, Harry saves the day even though he breaks rules, Harry gets rewarded). I *really* wish she would write on some of the possible ideas that were hinted at in the first book -- even friends have picked up on the same ideas and agreed that they'd make for terrific books. This book is good in that you don't have to read the first to understand the characters. Read this one first, and then Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone because that way you'll be blown away instead of slightly disappointed. It's not bad, but nowhere near as extraordinary as the first book.

Not Impressed, 16 Jul 2005
I have read this plus the previous one and am part-way through the third. All bought at boot fairs and lent me. I can't see what all the fuss is about. People sure are gullible! They are not that good and bear no comparison with true children's classics such as "Treasure Island" or "Huckleberry Finn".

Fun, but you won't get your feet wet., 26 Jun 2004
By A Customer
I love the Harry Potter series, and of the lot the fourth is my favourite. I just bought this one again (the old copy was way too worn) and read it for the first time in over six months, and it's as much fun as ever. Compared to books 4 and 5 its very light and shallow, but never the less its a step up from the first. The characters and the descriptions have a long way to go before the mood darkens. If you love the whole series and like me you think this was a lighter read than the following ones, and want something a bit more grown up, then try any of these to fill up the time before the sixth Hogwarts adventure. Any Artemis Fowl romp is entertaining (but can be really light as well), Jaqueline Wilson hardly ever gets it wrong, The Shadow In The North (Philip Pulman) is worth a look, and The Dark Is Rising and The King Of Shadows (Susan Cooper) were okay, but the one I'm reading now is The Guardian Of Time (C Chambers) which I'm really enjoying. I like Terry Pratchett as well, but that's quite different to all the others.

Not Gripping!, 23 Aug 2000
By A Customer
I thought that Harry Potter and the chamber secrets was ok. It was not very gripping, but you do have to read it before you read the 4th Harry Potter as something is not explained in the 4th one but it is explained in the second! My advice is to read all of them 'cause they get better as they go on!
