This review is from: Just the One: The Wives and Times of Jeffrey Bernard 1932-1997 (Paperback)
Brilliant - What an amazing life this man led. I had barely heard of Jeffrey Bernard before this biography was recommended to me and now I'll never forget him.
From start to finish I was gripped - it is an account of the life and loves of the world's greatest loafer, a man who achieved fame through his almost unquenchable thirst for Vodka, his remarkable knack of getting through countless wives and girlfriends combined with his ability to write about it so eloquently. His weekly column in the Spectator was appropriately nicknamed "a suicide note in weekly instalments".
Graham Lord has written a biography that is at the same time both hilarious (or as some would say "laugh out loud funny") and touching. A life punctuated by self-pity and indulgence whilst simultaneously deeply moving and towards the end, courageous.
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone with a sense of humour and a taste for drink and women. At times you will hate him, at times you will love him and at other times you'll just feel sorry for the man, but throughout the book you'll be saying to yourself, "the world needs more people like this in it."
There is a bit of Bernard in all of us.
