5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough history of an amazing force
This book Starts with the precursors of the SBS in WWII and traces their early developement, successes and failures in a thorough and entertaining way illustrated by tales of key characters (including, later in the story, Paddy Ashdown). It documents the parallel evolution of other UK special forces like the SAS (better known these days, but the SBS was there first and...

3.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good introduction
Although I was initially worried by the author's portfolio ( "Elvis: The Secret Files" etc ) this is actually a remarkably thorough, readable introduction to the SBS.

The author has conducted a mass of first-hand research, both in the archives and in interviews with former SBS operators. The narrative flows quickly and easily from the disparate units of WW2,...

This book Starts with the precursors of the SBS in WWII and traces their early developement, successes and failures in a thorough and entertaining way illustrated by tales of key characters (including, later in the story, Paddy Ashdown). It documents the parallel evolution of other UK special forces like the SAS (better known these days, but the SBS was there first and has always kept a lower public profile), including the operating differences and tensions between them, and the periods when they drifted in and out of favour - a pattern that continued up until the recent gulf wars. A real tale of heroes, or more accurately, superheroes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book looking at the history of the SBS, 18 May 2001
By A Customer
This is a great book talking about all the special boat services from ww2 right up to now, it talks about many of the famous raids by the SBS and makes you realise that there is more to special forces than the SAS, if your looking for a McNab style book forget it, this book talks about all SBS involvements and what they did and how they did it and talks about the bigger picture as well talking about MOD defence cuts which have created problems for the armed forces as a whole. if you have an interest in the marines or the sas then i recommend this book to you

(REAL NAME)
Although I was initially worried by the author's portfolio ( "Elvis: The Secret Files" etc ) this is actually a remarkably thorough, readable introduction to the SBS.

The author has conducted a mass of first-hand research, both in the archives and in interviews with former SBS operators. The narrative flows quickly and easily from the disparate units of WW2, through the covert roles of the early Cold War and then re-invention as a counter-terrorism force.

I incidentally learned much about Britain's Small Wars, enough to inspire me to start a new reading list.

The main disappointment is that the author filtered all his research into this fairly light tome. He constantly notes that events lie "outside the scope of this book" and he does seem to have sufficient material to write an extensive multiple-volume history of the unit. Perhaps some day...

5.0 out of 5 stars sbs, 13 Dec 2014

This review is from: SBS: The Inside Story of the Special Boat Service (Hardcover)
This book goes some way in balancing the excessive publicity given to the SAS.
The book is divided into 3 parts a} 1940-5 where the formation and activities of the SBS helped the Allies win the war b) 1945-70 with the rebirth of special forces with the fight against terrorism and the supporting the freedom of ex British dependancies and C) 1970 -97 which covers action in Borneo,Falklands, the Gulf and against the IRA.
Very well written and researched but with very poor maps.
The section that deals with the SAS complaint that the SBS should not use the name Special Boat Service just indicates the inferiority complex that has tarnished the reputation of the SAS.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good overall picture, from an outsiders view, 1 Mar 2002
By A Customer
The text is well written and compelling, with a flowing narritive troughout the history of this select band of men. As the author has never served with the unit, the book has the feel of a sterile examination of an outsider. That apart an excellent and informative read

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY INTERESTING, 14 Jan 2007

The Welsh Warrior "The Para" (South Wales, Great Britain) - See all my reviews
I find the SBS much more interesting than the SAS because they seem to love being in the shadows, unlike their SAS sisters. And i find that much more interesting than the nuts out shoot them up and call it a day sas book.

It dives deep in to SBS history from their foundings to todays operations. The book has lots of good photographs and diagrams showing maps and recon drawings. They are every bit as daring and brave as the SAS but they seem to use their patience and brains to execute their missions.(no disrespect to the sas)

the book is a must buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, 26 July 2008
Not a bad read at all, and full credit to the author for doing the research, but just as with his take on the Royal Marines, I found this just a little too dry in places.

3.0 out of 5 stars insightful!, 30 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Compared to the SAS, the SBS is less heard of. Therefore, it was great to finally have the opportunity to read up on its history. We can never say this enough, but regardless of the sometimes controversial decisions taken by our politicians, we owe a lot to these men and women who risk their lives everyday so that Britain remains free and a force for good in the world.
