4.0 out of 5 stars THREE adventures under one cover!, 16 Oct 2008
From the 'Usborne Young Reading' series of books, which combines good stories with easy reading text.

'Usborne Young Reading Books are carefully graded into levels: - Series One, Two and Three and cover a wide range of subjects to suit all interests and abilities.'

This particular book is from SERIES ONE, which is aimed at readers who have just started reading alone.
The stories are retold by Jane Bingham.

From the back cover:

'When King Arthur set up his court, hundreds of knights wanted to join him, But they had to fight fierce giants and deadly dragons first.
For only the bravest, strongest and most loyal of knights could sit at the king's Round Table.
Read on for three of their exciting adventures.'

Colourful paperback covers open to 48 high quality matt pages, split into 3 chapters:

1. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
2. The tale of the kitchen knight
3. Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady

Numbered pages. Illustrated throughout this book is enhanced by meaningful expressions, easy-to-follow-text and some speech bubbles.

Example of text:

From Chapter 2

'The tale of the kitchen knight

One day, a young stranger arrived at king Arthur's castle.
He had beautiful white hands but his clothes were old and torn.
"I have nowhere to go," he told the king. "Please Sire, may I stay for a year?"
King Arthur liked the look of him, so he agreed.
"Sir Kay can take care of you," he said.
Grumpy Sir Kay was in charge of the kitchens. He sneered at the young boy.
"Hmph! I shall call you Pretty Hands," he said.
"Now let's see how hard you can work."...........'

....and so Pretty Hands set about various kitchen tasks....for nearly a year........without a word of complaint.
Then a lady arrived...who was rather rude but needed some knightly help..............because her sister, Lady Lyonesse had been captured by the Red Knight, a knight as strong as seven men!
She is not terribly impressed when the only volunteer is the kitchen boy, Pretty Hands.........
.....but things change quite quickly and dramatically for the young stranger, by the end of the story!

The book ends with a page about 'The Legend of King Arthur'.

This book is great - I love the whole series. Son regularly goes to this book when asked to choose a bedtime story. It is simple enough text that I think he will soon - end reception be able to read some himself, but the stories are interesting and engaing enough for him to want to read them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite short, 9 Mar 2013

I've bought a lot of books in this series but this isn't the best. There are only three stories and they're not particularly gripping- not much about knights, mainly Sir Gawain being taught a lesson. If you're after action and exciting tales, give this a miss and buy King Arthur from the same series.

Bought to keep an (almost) five year old who had just broken his arm occupied and slightly stop him from running around as he normally does. He liked it but told me over the phone that he did not like the witch at the end but as I was speaking to him from abroad and the phone line was crackling I cannot fully confirm this!!

5.0 out of 5 stars 6 star reading series, 7 Sep 2012
This review is from: Stories of Knights (Young Reading (Series 1)) (Hardcover)
Usborne Young Reading is an outstanding series of condensed versions of classic works of children's and adult literature, along with a few non-fiction titles. We have about a dozen of these now as my daughter is getting through about one a week. They are intended for children who are beginning to read alone but they are equally suited to an earlier stage with a child reading aloud to an adult. As well as being exciting stories with lovely illustrations, there is a high level of consistency in reading standard within each of the three levels - not just text size and word count but most importantly difficulty of individual words (which is where most "reading books" fall down). There are also speech bubbles in some of the illustrations, often amusing ones, which go down very well. Different titles also introduce a good variety of non-English names, acronyms, abbreviations, dates etc. I cannot recommend this series highly enough.
