Excellent introduction to puberty for curious pre-teens
on 11 December 2015
Bought for my starting-to-develop 10yr old daughter, I was looking for a book covering the basics in a simple, not to in-depth matter (so as not to scare the bejaysus out of her!) I read through it first to make sure it wasn't too explicit/graphic etc. It's written simply, clearly and in a light-hearted manner- just what I was looking for! Ideal for a 'starter' book to introduce the idea of puberty/emotions/body changes etc.
Some negative reviews complain that it covers sex/how babies are made etc.- and that they're going to give the book to their daughters when they're 12-13.....errr...they're going to have heard/discussed many, many myths and horror stories by that age! A review from an 11yr old actually says that the book DOESN'T cover things she wanted to know....emphasising my belief it's a good 'starter' book.
These mums had also bought it for their 8-9yr old daughters....I'm sorry, but a simple little talk with them at that age about what's happening to them (it's just your body changing as you start changing from a little girl into a teenager) is in my opinion a more suitable option than presenting them with ANY book on the subject- I imagine books on this subject are all aimed at age 9+ and will include ALL topics to do with puberty to reassure and inform the child that what's happening is 'normal'!
I'd much rather she had the basic facts, and let her explore how the information makes her feel than have her head filled with rubbish in the playground! Love this book and will be recommending it to my friends with daughters of similar ages.
