The book is great for first time piano players as it explains how to play and read piano music in an effective, easy to understand cartoon format. Each new topic eg.the different keys and concepts are introduced in a gradual sequence so you never get mixed up or overwhelmed. Especially useful to the "teach yourself learner" as the CD demonstrates how the music piece should sound like (ie.the tone and speed) giving the student/pianist the reassurance required as well as an opportunity to play along with the CD.May not be ideal for those who wish to learn the more classical and operatic piano styles, but a good book to start with nevertheless.

Since I consider my self tone-deaf any book that can actually remedy this to some effect is a welcome addition to my book shelves. The truth is I bought this book not for my self but for my seven year old daughter who had earlier during the year started attending piano lessons. The book is very cleverly illustrated both so as to capture and maintain the attention of a child as well as to make learning how to play the piano as easy as possible. I consider my daughter the best critic of how useful this book remains for her even though my daughter’s piano teacher was also quite impressed by its contents. If you have a child who has just started learning how to play the piano or if the child within you wants to have another go at learning how to read music and also play such a magnificent instrument then this book is highly recommended both for its simplicity and effectiveness.

This is an excellent book. Although it is clearly aimed at children, the book is appealing to adults because of the sheer volume of information contained within it. Very well worded, excellent explanations throughout and a sensible level of music for the beginner.

My only criticism is that because the CD was added at a later date, the book does not tell you which CD track corresponds to which piece of music. This is best resolved by playing the CD through completely and marking up the book yourself with the track numbers. There are a lot of tracks, so it's quite essential to do this.

Despite this shortcoming I'm giving the book full marks, because I think it is technically very good and represents excellent value for money.

I bought this for my 8 yr old daughter, to see if I could interest her in learning the piano. Haven't managed it yet, but I had a go myself and got hooked! It starts at the very beginning - showing you where the notes are on the piano, and then introducing them one by one on the staff - both left and right hands from the start.

The syle is fun and appealing, and you really find yourself learning quickly, playing simple tunes almost immediately.

Excellent book! I bought it for my son who is seven and is hopefully starting to learn to play soon. In the meantime I am working my way through it. It is very clear, easy to follow with a lovely selection of simple but varied music pieces to practise. Perfect for a teach yourself beginner.

I bought this book as I liked the look of the simple cartoons and I thought my kids would use it to learn to play the piano. As it happens they have no desire to learn at all. I, on the otherhand decided to give it a try. I have never been able to read music, never played a piano, or any other instrument and so I needed something simple!! This was great. The book takes you right to the start and the characters explain it in simple terms (just what I needed!!) You learn a new tune with each new key or technique you learn, so you can see your progress and what you are achieving. The CD plays each tune so I have listened it it a couple of times just to make sure my piano playing sounds as it was intended. Although I am only half way through this book, I feel I am making really good progress and whilst this book is probably intended for kids, I actually think it's good for all ages. In the last week, even my husband has started to use the book to!! Great for all and I would highly recommend it!

This book is great for kids who are learning from the beginning. The accompanying CD allows you to check you are doing it right and gives you something to aspire towards. The pieces build up nicely so as you work your way through the book, you gain skills step by step. Another piano book I recommend for learners is "CHESTER'S EASIEST PIANO COURSE BOOK 1 PF: Bk.1".

I got this to help me between piano lessons. I'm glad I got the one with the cd, that always helps but the tracks start much too quickly, not leaving enough time to place fingers on the piano and ready yourself so you start at a disadvantage. The tunes come out really fast too, there's no feeling that the music is there to help, it feels like an impatient teacher waiting to rap knuckles if you don't keep up with the fast pace.
I've had 15 piano lessons and my teacher has me playing 12 bar blues already but in this book I cannot get past page 27. Seriously! I'm a motivated adult who is determined to learn to play but if I were a child I think I'd lose heart, by page 26 you play with both hands at the same time, not the whole tune, just 4 simple bars but still. I am finding it difficult and keep going back to other books that don't leave me feeling quite such a failure. I really would not recommend this for a child, if I am lucky enough in the future to be helping Grandchildren learn to play I will ensure I help them through this book very slowly and it would not be my first choice.

I bought this book to help me try and teach my 7 year old daughter. I thought it would help me learn too - and it has. It progresses at a good pace for novices and we are both delighted that after two months we are able to play simple tunes. My daughter wanted to add to this review too: This book is great. I will keep it forever. It has lots of interesting pieces and hard pieces but I have learnt lots from it and know I am very good at piano.I have learnt quavers, crotchets, minims, semi-breves and tied notes. I will be flying thorough it.
