5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, motivational guide to sociological concepts
Far better written, and far more contemporary than either Haralambos or Sociology in Focus. Giddens text is captivating and intriguing to those who already have an interest in the subject, and basic enough for those who haven't yet got a grounding in sociology to develop one. While not necessarily recommended for A-Level, I have used this book and am far happier with it...

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, but not excellent text., 19 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sociology (Paperback)
Giddens provides a good, comprehensive text, which covers a broad range of sociological issues. I would disagree with the previous review: this book is ten times beeter than 'Sociology in Focus', which is minimal on fact and useless on evaluation. However, I do have to concur that Haralambos' 'Sociology: Themes and Perspectives' is a great book, packed with both fact and evaluation. Nevertheless, I would still recommend Giddens' book, as it is an extremely credible text: it is on the first year reading list for my Social and political Science course at Cambridge!

This book is simply a superb introduction to Sociology & a very good study aid. Though complex in places it is readily accessible and a must-have for all A-Level Sociology students.

This book contains all the information you would expect and demand from a sociology textbook, but it's simply not as accessable as other books that are on the market. In order to fully utilize this book i think you need to know the information already as the Giddens textbook is probably best used for the application of information in specific essay topics. A more useful textbook in terms of information is M.Haralambos (ed) although this can be long-winded in places. I think that the best purchase for sociology would be 'Sociology in Focus' as it's simple and easy to use. This combined with a sociology dictionary is probably all you'll need for the course. Other texts you may need from time to time are probably best got from the library.
