This review is from: City of Masks (Paperback)
Every Hecht novel that I've read has been well researched, well written, well plotted, well paced, atmospheric and interesting. This book is no exception. It's set in New Orleans, the city of the title and features parapsychologist Cree (short for Lucretia) Black, who has been recruited to lay the ghosts haunting a member of an old aristocratic family. Hecht's not inconsiderable skill is making it (almost) all seem so plausible and he does this by including chunks of science when the occasion demands. But this is always appropriate and, as I mentioned above, very well researched.

Although this is largely set in an old dark house, it is not a `traditional' old dark house type of ghost story in the style of, say, Jonathan Aycliffe, who's stories are also extremely well written but very, very disturbing: it is much more like a conventional `whodunit' except, in this case, the detective happens to be an attractive female ghost buster. If you are familiar with the non Lincoln Rhyme Jeffrey Deaver books `City of Masks' has the feel of one Deaver's better ones. It would be great as a holiday read but it certainly isn't 'merely' that.

5.0 out of 5 stars READ IT NOW, 21 Jun. 2004
This review is from: City of Masks (Paperback)
The first of apparently two novels featuring Cree Black. Not read the second one but I can't wait to get my hands on it! The first, City Of Masks is absolutely unbelievable, as by Daniel Hecht is Puppets and the best of all Skull Session! Read it immediately. Read them all. Unbelievable!
