5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on American baseball player
This is a wonderful book on American baseball player Lou Gehrig, full of history and anecdotes. The author does a fine job and writes wonderfully. Though you may have not the slightest interest in home runs or Babe Ruth, the story presented here of this amazing fellow is fascinating, moving.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dear Old Lou
As an English baseball fan I love the stories of baseball legends, so this book though about a legend isn't legendary. It might be me but Lou Gehrig comes over as something of a bore. Good for knowing the facts and figures but if you want a rollicking good read this ain't it

This review is from: Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig (Paperback)
Wonderful, evocative and emotional - Jonathan Eig's stunning biography of the great "Iron Horse" Lou Gehrig is simply one of the best sports books written, right up there with "The Fight" by Norman Mailer and "All Played Out" by Pete Davies.

Covering Gehrig's pre-Yankee life on through his stellar career with the Bronx Bombers and his incredible consecutive games streak until his sad early death from ALS, Eig vividly brings Gehrig and his peers to life so that when the inevitable conclusion occurs, it packs a real emotional punch.

Highly highly recommended. Go buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baseball great, 13 Sep 2011
This review is from: Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig (Paperback)
Lou Gehrig comes out of this story as one of sport's gentlemen, a genuinely nice guy. He had a great career with the Yankees, playing wingman to Babe Ruth for much of his career. But all the way through the book, the reader is aware that it isn't going to be a happy ending. And when Gehrig's illness strikes, the way he humbly handles it leaves the reader full of sympathy and regret for a life cruelly cut short. Gehrig had a great career, but this book leaves me wondering how much greater it could have been had he been able to play on another couple of years.
