4.0 out of 5 stars Supremely beautiful deck for the experienced reader
The relationship the reader forms with any given deck is, of course, a very personal thing. Either the images on the cards spark off the necessary imaginative processes or they do not and only handling the cards themselves will tell you, but this deck is a marvellous thing to possess, simply for its superb and ancient art work. 3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Deck
I don't give this a good because there are several problems with this edition of the cards. To start with the positive, the Visconti Tarot istelf is a wonderful set of images and the gold reproduction of this set is good. Now for the negatives, which I believe make this set not worth the money. The modern images are very poor artistically and quite "pre-raphaelite" in...

The relationship the reader forms with any given deck is, of course, a very personal thing. Either the images on the cards spark off the necessary imaginative processes or they do not and only handling the cards themselves will tell you, but this deck is a marvellous thing to possess, simply for its superb and ancient art work. Faithful copies of the original Visconti-Sforza deck, (produced in Renaissance Italy to celebrate the marriage of a powerful nobleman's daughter) they must surely represent some of the finest craftsmanship ever devoted to the creation of a Tarot. It is a shame, however, that the artwork on the few more modern cards which have had to be substituted for those originals which have been lost over the ages, eg."The Devil" is not quite up to the standard of the reproduction cards.
I have found them relatively easy to read and a great pleasure just to look upon, but the size necessary to show the images to their best advantage means awkward handling for average hands. I would strongly recommend this deck though, as a gift for a friend who reads Tarot, if you are lucky enough to have one, as the beauty of these cards should guarantee you free readings for a long time to come.

I don't give this a good because there are several problems with this edition of the cards. To start with the positive, the Visconti Tarot istelf is a wonderful set of images and the gold reproduction of this set is good. Now for the negatives, which I believe make this set not worth the money. The modern images are very poor artistically and quite "pre-raphaelite" in character rather than early rennaisance as the original image cards are, so the faces of the modern character cards, especially the queens is very saccharine, sweet and out of character with the old images on the major arcana. The second issue I have with these is the quality of the card used, it is thin and flimsy, surely a heavier grade could have been used given the cost of these cards, so depite being beautiful to look at, they are certainly not beautiful or pleasing to the touch.
