This book should be required reading for all diabetics, particularly those who are insulin dependent. I have been diabetic for 24 years and feel that if I had had this information from the start I may well have been able to avoid some of the complications I am experiencing now. Although the author is American, it is not in any way difficult to follow for the European reader and the explanations of how insulin works are easy to understand. The various techniques for calculating insulin doses and getting the basal rate correct are perfectly simple and more importantly work. Since reading this book, my control has improved a lot; my last HBA1C was 6.2 whereas previously I had been struggling to get below 8.0. Education for diabetics in the UK is a bit hit and miss I think and focuses more on telling you what to do rather than on explaining why. I have often been in a situation where I have felt that I know as much if not more about diabetes than the medical professionals who are supposed to be guiding me which is an uncomfortable position to be in, particularly if you are struggling a bit. With this book I have felt a lot more confident about my illness and a lot more in control. I would recommend it to diabetics and caregivers and the medical profession alike.

My daughter is 14years old and wears an insulin pump. We have managed diabetes for 10years, but this book was so informative and has helped me to re look at the reports generated by the pump. I also enjoyed the light humour and understanding.

I went from an HBA1C of 13.5% to 6.0% in 6 months by following the straight forward advice given in this book. I think every diabetic should own a copy.

Extremely informative on all aspects of diabetes, and provides a great overview of the history of diabetes technology. Although I have been a type-1 diabetic for 34 years, I learnt so much from this book, and increasing your knowledge about the disease you live with is always useful. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it can be very American in some parts.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about 18 months ago and since then I have read just about everything on the subject and didn't think there was much more to find out. However, this book, written by a diabetes doctor who has diabetes himself, is packed with many useful tips that I haven't come across before (such as deducting the fibre from the carbohydrate value on high fibre foods) and also the reasons why things happen and how you can overcome them in a very practical, non-judgemental manner. Definitely recommend this book!!

This review is from: Think Like a Pancreas: A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin--Completely Revised and Updated (Kindle Edition)
Beware that ts book is written in American English and for an American audience, hence it talks about medical insurance for example. However, diabetes is diabetes whether you are American or British, so in the main this is a very good book, covers everything you would want to know and explains an awful lot more that you would generally get out of the average medical team. Particularly good for those who are on multiple injections or pumps and carb count etc. Not a substitute for DAFNE but a very good companion.

I bought this book as I had seen it recommended in various diabetes forums and was not disappointed. Would recommend to fellow type 1s.

the author pulls no punches on the difficulties encountered - and gives some good tips and ideas. I had hoped to give it to my 12 year old granddaughter (who has Type1) but gave it to her mother instead. More adult and technical than |'d anticipated.

A most valuable book to help anyone who has, or who is living with someone who has diabetes in the family.
