4.0 out of 5 stars useful flash deconstruction from macromedia guru
While I wouldn't go so far as to say that this is an essential purchase, it is certainly a very useful resource for intermediate level flashers and web designers. The reverse engineering or deconstructing of several of Hillman's Flash projects gives real insight into building visually impressive, compact flash movies, and will encourage "good form" practice with...

This book is an unusual offering, and that's what makes it valuable. It does not claim to teach you Flash, and requires at least a little grounding in the software, but it does teach you a design approach for Flash, as well as explaining how to produce some fairly advanced effects.
As a programmer coming to Flash with an appreciation of, but not much skill in, design, I have found this book invaluable. However, it is severely let down by numerous very basic errors - text which explains very poorly or fails to explain how to carry out vital steps in the procedure, many many screen shots which don't match the text they're supposed to illuminate, and an overall design which just tries far too hard. I get the impression that Mr. Curtis may have written a great Flash 4 book and then got a little sloppy in the remix.
Not a book for the beginner - you need your wits about you to translate between Curtis-speak and genuine Flash commands from time-to-time, but if you're willing to persevere then you are certain to learn from the exercises in here.

While I wouldn't go so far as to say that this is an essential purchase, it is certainly a very useful resource for intermediate level flashers and web designers. The reverse engineering or deconstructing of several of Hillman's Flash projects gives real insight into building visually impressive, compact flash movies, and will encourage "good form" practice with Flash. What's unusual about this book is that it (successfully) bridges good design with Flash programming examples, so overall the book should prove useful to a wide audience. The chapters on 3D and video are also welcome, though clearly the numerous techniques and development options are beyond the scope of this book. Anyway, Hillman's approach and credentials are beyond reproach. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Design over content, 16 Feb. 2002

This review is from: Flash Web Design: The V5 Remix - the Art of Motion Graphics Continues (Paperback)
What is the purpose of this book? It looks nice and is designed beautifully, but has very little else to offer. It does provide some insight into the working methods of the authors, but other than that it is not a book that I would recommend for anyone who wants to learn Flash or expand on what they already know.
First up, the chapters take the form of lessons or tutorials, although there is no CD containing source files, and the companion website also does not offer source files that would actually enable one to follow the lessons step by step.
As another reader pointed out, there are a number of mistakes, including reference to Flash 4 as oposed to Flash 5, incorrect screen shots and an incomlete method in presenting the tutorials themselves. Many of the important steps are not described in enough detail and the book attempts to skim over many subjects without giving the reader a thorough understanding.
While Hillman Curtis and the other authors are unduoubtedly expert in their field of Flash Web Design, their writing style and ability to explain things clearly is obviously lacking.
If you want a book that teaches Flash 5 go for "Foundation Flash 5" from Friends of Ed. Their "Foundation ActionScript", "Flash 5 Studio" and "New Masters of Flash" should provide everything else one needs after mastering the basics.
Two stars out of five, and that's only because of the visual design. The book is definitely not worth the money. If it had a CD with source files on it, then I would say go for it, but as it doesn't, better spend your money elsewhere.
