This review is from: Shadow of a Doubt (Hardcover)
A chance meeting in a wine-bar in Hensteignton brings together Joan Dillon and Sarah Makepeace. The former is disillusioned with her life and husband, and she uncharacteristically opens up to Sarah over a bottle of wine. When Joan explains the point at which her life started to go wrong, Sarah realises that she has met Angus Dillon five years ago when she was part of the search looking for her missing niece Julie Makepeace, but that she never believed that Angus was responsible, although the police only let him go though lack of evidence.

Joan invites Sarah and her boyfriend for dinner, but Sarah takes a work colleague to whom Joan takes a shine. So it's not a total success, although Sarah is again drawn to the quiet man she had met five years previously.

Then a short time later the body of a young girl is found in the same desolate area as Julie Makepeace, and Angus Dillon is immediately taken in for questioning.

The mystery seems on the face of it straightforward, but is in fact only by exploring the complicated relationships and emotions of the characters that the killer is revealed. A most enjoyable read.
