4.0 out of 5 stars A highly useful revision title for Cardiology, 22 July 2013
This review is from: Crash Course Cardiology, 4e (Paperback)
The crash course is perhaps one of the biggest revision series of books on the medical market that is aimed at the undergraduate medical student. This title is the 4th edition of the series on the topic of Cardiology and follows the layout & style that has slowly come to define the series with the addition of more exam style preparation questions.

The advantage of this text is that it gives the student most of the information that they could need to prepare them for the undergraduate exams, all in one place. The structure of the title begins with covering the fundamentals of Cardiology such as the history, CV examination & common investigations. Following this the student is given information on the common presentations in Cardiology with the next part of the book giving the reader more information on Cardiac conditions such as arrhythmias. The explanations that are present in this text on the conditions covered are certainly at a level the student can understand which is not the case with other such titles. The final section presents the reader with exam-style questions to allow him/her to prepare for their exams.

The disadvantage of this title as is the case with much of the series is if you are a visual learner. This title does naturally have a few more images in it than other titles in the series to demonstrate the arrhythmias as found on ECG investigation. This said though I do feel that there could certainly be a lot more examples of ECGs for the student to review to prepare him/herself for the examination setting where they could be presented with one of them.

It is my opinion that if you are looking for a title that covers revision and gives you a better introduction to ECG's, with more examples whilst still covering what you need to know on Cardiology then you should strongly consider ECG Interpretation Made Incredibly Easy! (Incredibly Easy! Series). This title though written for nurse practitioners in the US, having read it myself certainly covers nearly everything that you would be expected to know in your exams and whether you are a visual or non-visual learner this title is certainly an easier read.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a title that will allow you to revise Cardiology & are not worried about having a too visual book nor one that is a quick & easier read then certainly go for this title. The main advantage of this title over the other I mention is the exam preparation questions so choose which you feel would be more appropriate for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful med student revision material, 2 July 2013

This review is from: Crash Course Cardiology, 4e (Paperback)
Review: Crash Course: Cardiology, 4th Edition. Churchhouse & Ormerod.

Having used many `Crash Course' books during my time at university, I have found that this current edition has maintained its reputation as a solid revision adjunct. It is well laid out, very clear, concise and it navigates you around the important areas of cardiology with relative ease. I found the arrhythmia sections extremely useful and they were pitched at a good level to grasp a good understanding but without all the additional (but often irrelevant to exams) information found in many books. I would highly recommend this book to any medical student who wants a better understanding of cardiology - particularly as an easy reference source prior to an exam. Further to that, it has a number of `best-of-five' and EMQs at the end to practice. I found the questions were pitched at a good level for medical school exams. In summary: a useful book for revision and last minute reading prior to exams.

A good introduction to cardio. Found two errors but perhaps that's to be expected from any book.
