4.0 out of 5 stars Preclinical haematology and immunology, 13 Aug 2012
This review is from: Crash Course Haematology and Immunology, 4e (Paperback)
As an Elsevier Student Rep I have been provided with a free review copy of this book, which is part of the popular Crash Course series. As the title suggests, it is a focused book that gives a good grounding in preclinical haematology and immunology, as well as some MCQs and EMQs at the end.

The book is slightly weighted towards haematology, which is fine as this area is much more "core" in most medical school curricula. The text isn't too heavy and is broken up with good use of bulletpoints and figures. The figure of the coagulation cascade on page 63 is particularly useful for visualising how to test each part of the cascade. As it's a basic science book rather than a clinical book, it will be particularly useful for students in years 1 and 2 of the medical course, who are undoubtedly the primary target audience for the book and will certainly find the conciseness of the book very helpful for revision. Senior students will probably find a clinical book more useful, as this text concentrates on scientific rather than on clinical aspects.

Overall I would recommend this book to medical students studying haematology and immunology for the first time. Information is given at the right level and the figures are easy to understand. Its other advantages are that it's concise and doesn't contain too much unnecessary information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 4 July 2013
This review is from: Crash Course Haematology and Immunology, 4e (Paperback)
The closely related topics of haematology and immunology are covered superbly in Gargani's crash course text. The paper is good quality but not shiny, making for easy reading, along with the calming blue-themed colour scheme. The text itself has a clear layout, providing sufficient detail for a firm understanding without an overload of information

All necessary terminology is clearly explained, especially terms whose meaning are often skimmed over by lecturers who assume we understand what they mean. The luxury of having them well defined in this text is invaluable to understanding and remembering the material, and saves trips to wikipedia or google.

Clinical applications of the physiological processes are embedded nicely throughout. Having the, seamlessly integrated into the text like this is a truly excellent way of achieving a deep understanding of topics such as haemostasis. The MCQs come with fully explained answers to guarantee you have understood the topics in question.

Whereas with most books I would be inclined to take summary notes, this book has rendered my study habit redundant. Its layout is so perfectly concise that it would be wasting time to try to pare the information down any more. A rarity in textbooks, this crash course achieves perfection in the level of detail I require, saving me a great deal of time, effort, ink and paper in making my own notes. Even if I hadn't come across this book as a student rep, I would definitely have purchased it as a guide to the key aspects of haematology and immunology.

Overall, the book is thoughtfully prepared. The finished product is a pleasure to read, and peppered with useful, clear diagrams and tables to organise the information visually and memorably.

Disclosure: I am a medical student who was chosen by Elsevier to provide feedback for their books. Any books I receive to review are free of charge but I am not paid and have no other connection to Elsevier.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Crash Course Haematology and Immunology, 4e (Paperback)
This book is very clear and easy to understand. It is a great starting point for looking at these subjects, although it sometimes lacks adequate depth. Overall, well worth a buy!
