This review is from: A Slender Reputation: An Autobiography (Hardcover)
Kathleen Hale wrote this account of her life when she was already in her nineties but her memory for people and places and her talent to telling lucidly and entertainingly challenges any writer I've ever read. Her life encompassed such a wealth of experiences from being the rebel girl at a stuffy school to impoverished life as a struggling artist, land girl during the first world war, living in France with her artist lover, working for Augustus John and meeting a circus of eccentric and brilliant artists before falling in love with an older man and marrying his son to give her the children she wanted. Life as difficult wife and mother, writing Orlando books and experimenting with new artforms, coping with another world war, trying an affair as a cure for marital unhappiness, and more. Through it all is a determination to develop her art, even when she found it an agony. And she was a brilliant artist with far more to her than just the Orlando books that made her the money she needed. She deserves far more than the 'clender reputation' some male artist labelled her with - she's better than any of them!
