5.0 out of 5 stars Well ahead of its time as a sci-fi book, but may also be more., 10 May 2009

This review is from: Star Fire (Paperback)
If you Google 'Ingo Swann' you soon discover that he is far more than some jargon-spouting geek or fantasy-oriented scribbler. He has a long and proven pedigree in the field of investigating spychic phenomena - and also of being investigated for such skills himself.

Star Fire is a novel and as such has to be seen for what it is - a work of fiction featuring Daniel Merryweather who has vastly enhanced skills as a psychic who becomes aware of research programmes around the world which seek to harness such powers as weapons. The story follows ways in which he disrupts these and is 'pursued' by those who detect his own extistence.

However, when you take into account Swann's own history, it makes it hard not to wonder how many of his fictional hero's skills and levels of understanding are actually based upon Swann's own ideas and experiences.

The book IS a tad slow in places, but don't let this put you off. In an odd (almost ironic) sort of way, it is far more 'grounded' than so many of today's half-baked flights of sci-fi fantasy.

UPDATE Jan 19th 2015

Despite this book being one of my all-time favourite Sci-Fi stories, I somehow I mislaid my hardback copy but was easily able to replace it from PYDAR MEWS BOOKS whom I found via ABE Books. Hardback versions of this book can be tricky to find, but Pydar gave astonishing service (ordered 16th, arrived 17th).

5.0 out of 5 stars Ingo Swan -Star Fire, 8 April 2011
This review is from: Star Fire (Mass Market Paperback)
Worldly renowned author Ingo Swan won't let the readers down with this book, one the best of all his writings, one of the best SF genre. Personally, I highly recommend it.
Ingo Swan, who had his own psychic powers scientifically documented and authenticated, has written this nerve-tingling breakthrough novel. The main character, rock superstar Dam Merriweather, who discovers his own astonishing psychic powers, discovers during his "out-of-body mind voyages" that superpowers like Russia and America invest in developing deadly psychic weaponry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satellites, hippies, and flowers that sing, 19 Feb. 2003
This review is from: Star Fire (Paperback)
DARPANET, before it became the Internet, space-borne "Starwars" beam weapons, terrorist weapons' smuggling, hacking, and a psychic hippy who talks to flowers.
Given some of the ingredients of this book, you might be forgiven that it was written in the 90s, which it actually pre-dates significantly. This book is an inventive read, if as a hard SF reader you can get past some of the initial construction, although the author's writing skills could have benefitted from a little harsher criticism from his editor. At times it can be almost wooden or pedestrian. On other occasions it suffers from flights of fancy, although this should be too much of a surprise given that the author claims to have been a member of the CIA's "remote viewing" experimental team (gathering intelligence by ESP) in the 1970s. Despite its faults, still one of my favourite books, though, after 20 years and I still use the title today as an online/gaming nickname.
Sits on my bookshelf alongside Slan, Dragons Egg, Enemy Mine, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
