I picked this up for about 50p in a bargain bin and I'm so glad I did! It's a brilliant modernist novel, clever and sad and entertaining in equal measure. Cendrars was apparently very influential in his native France and Switzerland but his renown doesn't seem to have stretched to English-speaking countries. I've found one of his other books in translation but they're not easy to come by.
