5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden gem of a book
I was lucky enough to read this book when it first came out. I've never heard of Paul Jaskunas but since reading this have spent my time checking if he's written anything else. This is a beautifully written novel, with gorgeous prose and a driven narrative. The characters are full and rounded. All in all a superbly written book which deserves to be more well known than...

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading blurb
This is the second book I've read recently for which the blurb does not match the content of the novel. The front cover of 'Hidden' states: 'Left dead by her attacker. Five years later, he knocks on her door.' This is plain wrong. Neither of the protagonist's suspected attackers ever knocks on her door. (Amusingly, I have seen two versions of the cover - one with 'Five...

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading blurb, 16 Aug 2009
This review is from: Hidden (Paperback)
This is the second book I've read recently for which the blurb does not match the content of the novel. The front cover of 'Hidden' states: 'Left dead by her attacker. Five years later, he knocks on her door.' This is plain wrong. Neither of the protagonist's suspected attackers ever knocks on her door. (Amusingly, I have seen two versions of the cover - one with 'Five years...' and one with 'Six years...')

The back cover blurb describes the book as 'A chilling psychological thriller and a gripping journey into the hidden corners of a young woman's mind.' Again, this is misleading - the book is not a thriller. There is a lot of pseudo-psychology, but this is neither chilling nor gripping in my view.

The back cover blurb goes on to say that the protagonist 'receives a call from the lawyer who helped put her husband in jail. Told that another inmate has confessed to the crime...' Actually this is all given in backstory in the novel itself and so the use of present tense here is also misleading.

A more accurate description of the novel would be along the lines of 'Self-obsessed Maggie Wilson never tires of replaying the same old fragmented memories round and round and round in her head, achieving the quite impressive feat of making a frenzied attack seem dull dull dull, and making the reader wish it had been more successful.'

That being said, the writing was often very good, and I enjoyed the parts about Maggie's life as a student and her relationship with her husband.

3.0 out of 5 stars quite hard work, 19 Mar 2014

Have to agree with the majority view above - the back and forth (present to past) was irksome, and I ended up skimming some bits.

Again as above - the account of the courtship and early marriage was interesting, but the modern stuff (therapist, law enforcement, elderly next door neighbour, job at the local paper) seemed to drag.

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete lead on., 6 Aug 2011
This review is from: Hidden (Paperback)
A chilling psychological thriller and a gripping journey into the hidden corners of a young woman's mind.: thats what is written as the blurb of the book, and i was thoroughly disappointed.
The book is not a thriller, its a back and forth story of a woman who went through some hard times with her husband.
To begin with, i was gripped, i thought that, considering what was said about it, that there was a background story, and that she was going to be running away from her killer.

She didn't even hear from her killer, the real killer.
Total rip off, do not buy.
